Boys and Girls Club Nears Start, Rockwood, Harriman Middle Schoolers Targeted

Advocates of a Boys and Girls Club in Roane County are still passionate about their cause. They hope to see the beginnings of a club soon, too. “Our goal is to have a club in either Rockwood Middle School or Harriman Middle School by the middle of December,” said Sarah Stevenson, board development chair of the Roane County Boys and Girls Club. “It is a goal. We don’t have any money yet. We are going to have a founder’s campaign.” Organizers have decided the most in-need and underserved youth were middle-school-aged children. They decided Harriman and Rockwood children needed the most attention. Stevenson said as soon as a date is selected to begin the club, they’ll start looking at what programs to offer. She said the club is not going to try to run sports leagues like some larger Boys and Girls Club organizations do. Board members include Mike Dishman and Charlene Hipsher, with ex officio members District Attorney Russell Johnson, Sheriff Jack Stockton and Harriman Mayor Chris Mason.
