1 child killed, 1 hospitalized after suspected DUI crash
(WBIR) One of the children involved in a crash in Powell Sunday afternoon has passed away, according to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
KCSO posted on its site that the juvenile passenger in the front seat was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, Steven Steelman Jr., was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and taken for a blood draw. He’s been charged with vehicular homicide, third offense DUI, driving on revoked license, and driving without insurance.
Authorities said 33-year-old Steelman was traveling eastbound on West Beaver Creek Drive when he lost control of the vehicle near the 4100 block. The car went off the road and hit a telephone pole and tree on the passenger side.
Rural Metro rushed a juvenile passenger from the back seat to UT Medical Center.
Neighbors told 10News they heard the accident and ran to the scene to help, along with members of a nearby church.
KCSO said its not clear whether or not seat belts were being used.
