A state trooper confirmed one person was killed and at least three people were injured in two separate crashes on I-40 west at Lovell Road early Thursday morning.
By 9:30 a.m., all lanes of the interstate had reopened. From 4 a.m. to 7 a.m., the crash shut down all lanes and traffic was diverted at Pellissippi. After 7 a.m., troopers opened a few lanes at a time to let traffic through.
The first crash involved a tractor trailer and a car. A THP officer on scene said the driver of the car has been charged with DUI.
The trooper said the second crash involved two vehicles and one of the drivers died.
Officials said second crash did not happen because of the first crash.
A truck driver of 15 years, Sydney Hurst, got to the crash before the emergency crews arrived.
“When I got up here, there was nothing but smoke, havoc,” Hurst said, “One car ran into the back of the flatbed and the guy was entrapped. The car was smoking so I used my fire extinguisher and sprayed all around it.
